Second shoot

We started off and used the available actors to film the bedroom scene, we got plenty of shots so the day started off well. When our main actress arrived, we filmed parts that we needed all characters for so people weren't standing around doing nothing. After filming the first third of the day, Eilidh felt ill and went home, despite this setback, we carried on and made the most of the day.We then used the strobe light and filmed parts needed with that, meaning we didn't have a lot more to do. We wanted to make the most of the day so we got our actress to do various things so we could use for filler shots such as walking down a street, hitting a wall etc. When we got in the editing suite we were pleased with our results and were keen to add effects to our day's filming.

Updated Weather Forecast - 23rd November

Here is an update on the weather for our shoot. It seems to be a perfect day for filiming which is a major advantage and hopefully everything else will go perfectly too! :)

First shoot evaluation

Despite mix ups with the actors before the day, the day started very well because the weather looked a lot better than we originally thought when we looked at the weather forecast. Because of this, we started straight away filming the 'memories' part of our video, outside in the sun before it got dark. We made sure we got plenty of shots of this so that when it came to editing, we had plenty to choose from for the final video. We then went indoors to shoot the bathroom scenes. Here we fixed up the lighting so that it was traditionally dark of a drum & bass video, but the actress lit up enough so that we could see the lip syncing. We had the music in the background so that it was easier for our actress to mime the lyrics. Again, we got plenty of shots of each line and each shot in the bathroom so that when we edit we have a wide variety to choose from. We have looked at our first shoot on the computer and we are very pleased with what we have first produced. One thing we aim to work on for the second shoot is to take more care in framing our shots.

Shooting Plan

As there was a mix up with the schedule, actors had to work when we planned on filming so we have now decided to split it into two shoots. This has actually worked in our favor as it means we can pay more detailed attention to each individual shot.

Weather Forecast - 23rd November

This is the weather forecast for next tuesday when we intend on doing the next shoot. As it is a week away we will keep checking the forecast as it is likely to change.

Weather Forecast - 13th November

This was the weather forecast on the day we filmed. We were concerned as part of our shoot was planned to be outdoors so we took initiative and planned it indoors instead; concentrating on the bathroom scene. However, on the day the weather was beautiful and perfect conditions for our "memories" shoot.

Ideas for Digipack Image- getting used to photoshop

If you click on the picture you can see it bigger and in more detail! This is just a rough idea of something which could be used within the digipack; it was more about getting used to the kindof process we would need to go through in photoshop, and what tools would be appropriate.

Mark Ronson - Bang Bang Bang (Featuring Q-Tip & MNDR)

Music video analysis

Bike Song

- This is not the official video as we are not allowed to embed it onto the blog so we have had to use another.
- Some of the 80's style images are used in Mark Ronson's music videos are very similar to those used on his CD covers and web page designs.

Website Analysis - Mark Ronson

  • The website links to the style of Mark Ronson & The Business international because it uses the same retro and bright colours which represent him.
  • The main fuctions of the website are showing the songs by havingthe video right in the middle and then also another song on the side, this is a good way to promote his songs as the audience see them straight away when they go onto the website.
  • Here are some examples of comments from his Myspace page:
  •          Alan Hall

            Mark Ronson Case Study

Visual Style - A similiar visual style is used in both of the album covers. Only parts of his face is shown with different layers covering it. As this style has been used on both of the album covers, it gives Mark Ronson a personal style which makes him different from other artists and his albums memorable.

Colour - Bright colours are used on both of the images which make the album stand out and also as his genre is pop/electric, the colours show that style of music and relate to the videos he would have made also.

Inspirations - this is inspired by other pop/elecro artists because a lot of these artists in this genre use the same retro feel to their image.

            Character design/ test shot- Lucy

The hair will be long and down giving her a feminine edge. Again, we see the Fred Perry top and skinny jeans which will represent the band in their image and the audience can relate to this costume.

            Character and test shot- Jordan

Hairstyle is representative of the audience and the artist in keeping with an indie-rock image. He is again wearing the 'uniform' of Fred Perry top and skinny jeans in keeping with the videos aesthetic. He is dressed very similar to chase and status themselves so will represent them well.

Character and Test Shot - Alex

Make up/hairstyle- eye liner to be easily smudged, going to dye the long hair pink to mark her as the main character which is conventional for this genre as the audience and often artist will have unnaturally dyed hair eg hayley williams. wearing the Fred Perry top as well as the other characters to give a less individualistic look which is in keeping with the artists themselves as they usually wear sports branded clothing. We are using the tops as a uniform so that only their faces and hair mark them different and so that the audience can easily emulate their favourite artist.

            Initial camera practise.

I took some initial close up shots with a setting close to macro, then adjusted appatures, contrast etc to acheive interesting high contrast and dark exposured effects inkeeping with our theme. The photo's show intimacy with a dark edge ( hands almost clawing each other, black background and border effect),self torture (literal representation of the emotions portrayed) and lips which are often a sensual image yet again have an unsettling edge. The photo's are very quickly edited as examples of what we aim to acheive and will not be used; yet we are looking to use something similar in our final products.

This is a basic image board of some key locations, wardrobe items, themes and props we are using for inspiration etc.

            Album artwork research- same genre

Here, we see dark colours in the first four images, this is a convention of the genre so we will be using similiar colours in our artwork. The final image is an example of two albums by the same artist. Here, we see that the albums folllow on from eachother and continue the same theme which is an idea we are currently viewing by looking at the other albums of our artist.

            Ideas For The Digipak

This is a piece of contemporary art by Tracey Emin called ‘My Bed’. Tracey shows us her own bed, in the most embarrassing state which includes, empty booze bottles, fag butts, stained sheets, worn panties: the bloody aftermath of a nervous breakdown. By presenting her bed as art, she shares her most personal space, revealing she’s as insecure and imperfect as the rest of the world. Using this as inspiration, we aim to make the bedroom in the video like this to show the personalities of the characters. And for the digipak, we have an idea of using a close up of the unmade bed as one of the images to get the message across of what the song means without even having to listen to it. It also helps us to connect with the target audience as they will be able to relate to this particular state of the bedroom.

These 3 images are examples of pictures that could be used inside the digipak. The orginal picture is in the middle and I have enhanced the colour on the top one as I feel that a brighter picture would suit Chase and Status' image better. Then, I also thought that as the song it about hurt that red may not be the best colour to use so I changed the colour to a bright blue which I think puts a different edge on the photo and would look great in the digipak.

I saw these pictures and thought instead of using a stereotypical heart as an image, that using a real heart would put a different look on the digipak and although it still uses the red colour, it still looks pretty dark and gloomy which doesn't take away the dark feel that the song gives off. We could use this image on the back where the songs will be shown and using the idea of Florence and the Machines' album, lungs, we could put arrows from the different areas of the heart with the labels being the different songs.

These images are similar to the first hearts, however they are a bit more simple. I changed the colour on these picture to green as it could show the jealousy which we will show within our video.

These two image show a brick wall. Ignoring the woman in the top image, the idea is that the two girls will be stood in the middle, where that woman is either kissing or hugging each other, however the twist on this is that they will be covering there actual faces with each others arms so make it more secretive and it keeps the same theme as we hope to put in our video where the only faces being shown are the main characters. We thought that we could write Chase and Status on two different arms on the woman and for the title of the song 'heartbeat' our idea was that it could be spray painted onto the wall very big above the women, maybe in a green which again shows jealousy that will be shown within our video.

Here are the last two images I found and I think that it fits perfectly with the song. I changed the colour to thedark purple as I feel that this fits in better with the song. And also, the silloette style again keeps with the theme that the faces are not being shown.

            THE ARTIST'S IMAGE

            ARTIST’S IMAGE
Despite the genre of their music, Chase & Status’s image is much more in keeping with that of the indie genre; consisting of checked shirts, skinny jeans, polo tops and typically indie accessories such as trilby hats and ‘keds’ shoes. This marks them out not only as different to competition within their genre who generally wear a more hip-hop style of clothing but also appeals to a wide target audience who wish to emulate their style and can easily purchase it from high street stores (Topshop, Fred Perry etc). We will be representing this style within our video by designing all characters costumes around this image, with all characters wearing extremely similar outfits (see mood board). All items are easily purchased/common wardrobe staples for a lot of teenagers; meaning not only that our actors will be easy and inexpensive too dress but also that our target audience of 14-25 year olds will relate to the video and it's content.

Chase and Status - 'Hypest Hype' Feat. Tempa T

This is the latest video released by Chase&Status. It is a bit different to their other videos as it is entirely performance; however, we see the flashing images used again so we are confident that this effect will work in our video and fit well with the artist's image.

            Genre and Style.

The official genre is that of 'Drum & Bass' but it also has elements of dubstep and rock; with the break beats and distorted guitar mixed to create anew and innovative sound. The guitar is featured in several of Chase& Status's tracks such as 'Pieces' (see below for link). These two songs have gone against the genre and added new sounds with the acoustic guitar in 'Pieces' and electric guitar in 'Heartbeat'.
Their videos always have a dark theme running throughout with a hint of humour injected. There is also a lot of violence/relationship exploration and representation, often in conjunction with each other. Relationships are shown in a reasonably graphic manner, and the violence is also quite explicit.

The lighting is always very low key with bright flashes throughout and the general colours and visual design also keep too dark tones and even black and white/night vision filters are added in post-production.

In terms of camera work and shot types all techniques etc are used within the range of videos but predominantly mid/long shots and close ups. All of their videos have a narrative running throughout the song which will be shown a lot more than any performance aspect. Although we do see lip synching in all of them, and the occasional instrument the main focus is the storyline/characters etc and the idea of building up a visual representation whether it’s conceptual or more traditional (some are an even mix of both).

We aim to reflect this idea in our video by creating a strong non linear story line too follow throughout, accompanied by lip synching and some instrumental performance based shots, interspersed with choreographed dancers/ravers. Typically the videos stick to a small amount of locations and once again we will be reflecting this by concentrating on only a few different settings.

Chase & Status Feat Plan B - Pieces - Ram Records Offical Video (research of our band)

The flashing images at 4-11 to 4-22 is seen as constant convention in Drum n bass/ dubstep/ rock so we decided to use this type of flashing in our video. We are also going to be using similar locations ie a house/apartment and the streets.

Lyrics- Nneka heartbeat (chase and status remix)

            Heartbeat Chase And Status Lyrics

You said you'd be there for me
In times of trouble when I need you and I'm down
            And likewise you need friendship
It's from my side pure love but I see lately things have been changing
            You have goals to achieve
But the roads you take abroad are heartless
That wants you make another way
            You throw stones
Can you see that I am human I am breathing
But you don't give a damn

            Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you're causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you're causing

Blood blood blood.... blood is rushing

And now the world is asleep
How will you ever wake her up when she is deep in her dreams, wishing
            And yet so many die
And still we think that it is all about us
            It's all about you
You sold your soul to the evil and the lust
and the passion and the money and you
See innocent ones die, people hunger for decades
suffer under civilized armedrobbers, modern slaveholders

            Chorus
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you're causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you're causing
            http://www.elyricsworld.com/heartbeat_chase_and_status_lyrics_nneka.html

            Blood blood blood.... keeps rushing

            Evaded, eliminated, erased, interrogated
Our tradition, our love for our fellow countrymen,
our property, our resources - our pride

Can you feel my heart beating
            no no no....you don't

            Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you're causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you're causing

Nneka - Heartbeat (Chase & Status Remix)

This is the song we decided to use because we liked the dark sound, introduction of the guitar and felt that we could represent the band well.
