Planning Folder - Digipak

Planning Folder - Website

Planning Folder - Location

These sheets show our location information and recce sheet. These were done at the very start of our planning and so we changed location by the time we came to shoot as we found another, easier place. However, the new location used exactly the same rooms in the house so we didnt feel like we needed to re-do these sheets.

Planning Folder - Cast Information

These sheets show that we had permission from the actors to use them in our video and we also had their contact details so that we were able to contact them when we planned a filming session. Our cast was very reliable and we were more than happy with them.

Planning Folder - Written Storyboard

These sheets show our written storyboard. It tells you shot by shot what is happening in our video. After doing this, we realised that the shots were too long and if we were to actually stick to this then the video would be quite boring. So we didnt stick to the timings of these sheets however we did use most of the shot types and angles. If we had time we would have done these sheets again using the new shot times to make it easier, however we did not. But we feel that we made the right decision changing our mind.

Planning Folder - Storyboard

These are our storyboard planning sheets. These drawings are of a few still shots that show the main events that happen within our video. As you can see, we have stuck the the narrative of our video throughout and haven't had to change anything during the filming.

Planning Folder - Analysing other videos

Here was the start of our planning and research for our music video. We all watched different music videos and analysed them against different things. This then showed us what was common for music videos within our genre and what we should and could use within our own.

Image for the website

This is a still image from our music video that we have used on our website. We thought that this was the perfect shot to use as it again sticks to the theme of being quite dark with the bright pink hair standing out.

Back cover up to date

This is the back cover of our CD so far. As you can see we have stuck to the dark theme by using a black background and neon pink text, this then links in the website also. The idea of using the heart was actually taken from the Florence and Machine album cover 'Lungs' We thought that many artists use the very conventional, simple love heart and we wanted to be different and we believed that this was perfect.

Website up to date

This is a screen grab of when we were creating our website. As you can see we started using photoshop as we thought it would be easier, however we felt it did not look as professional so we then moved it over to iweb. Here you can see that we have kept to the theme of the video as we have included the bed and this symbolisies 'the cheating' that happened in our video. We have also used bright/neon colours as this is what Chase and Status used on their own website.

Overall Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The genre of our music video is Drum & Bass with elements of dubstep. Chase and Status’ videos have a dark theme in all of their videos, usually using relationships and violence which are often shown in a graphic manner. We have brought this element into our music video with the scene at the start in bed and also at the end in the bathroom. As the videos have a dark theme, low key lighting is using throughout them and we have used this within our video too, as well as using a strobe light with adds to the dubstep genre and exaggerates the anger shown in the video. All of Chase and Status’ videos have a narrative and this is shown more often than actual performance, such as lip syncing. We have also done this within our video and brought in some guitar performance to add a little more variety.
We have used postmodern ideas as we have challenged the convention of the ‘relationship’ within our video as we have used a homosexual couple instead of the usual heterosexual ones that are normally used within this type of genre.
The overall effect that challenging this convention has had on our music video is that it makes it different from the other videos in the same genre so therefore adds variety. It also puts a different twist on the song, as we changed the meaning of the words from the original song.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To get audience feedback, a small group were asked to watch out video and evaluate it. They had to state whether they believed it was minimal, basic, good or excellent. Below are the results of this.
Overall creativity - good
Holding a shot steady, where appropriate - excellent
Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate - excellent
Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate - good
Shooting material appropriate for a music video - good
Mise-en-scene appropriate for a music video - good
Editing making the meaning apparent to the viewer - excellent
Varied shot transitions, captions and other effects that are appropriate - excellent
Matching sound with images and editing to the music - excellent
Overall the music video so far is – excellent
Overall, we were extremely pleased with our feedback. However, we couldn’t change anything that was labelled ‘good’ to so that it was ‘excellent’ as we had already filmed this material and didn’t have time to re-film. Although, if we did have time, we would definitely do our best to make the ‘good’ statements ‘excellent’ by using a bigger variety of shot distances and making the the mise-en-scene was actually how it should be for the music video. However overall, we feel that we did our best and we were happy with the outcome of the music video.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The technologies we used to create our music video were imovie. We found this very easy to use so this meant we were able to experiement with lots of different editing techniques. These are very cleary shown throughout the music video and we felt that it made it look more like a professional video and a lot more interesting. For the CD cover and digipak we used photoshop. With photoshop we were able to personalise the images to look exactly how we wanted and it was a lot easier to portray and artist and theme the way we wanted. For the website we used iweb which again was the perfect program to use as we could add images and text exactly where we wanted without difficultly and we didnt have to change our website idea because we had no problems putting it together on iweb.

We used technology to research our production by looking at different videos by Chase and Status. This was so we could see what were the typical themes and we were able to stick to the same one. It was also so we could be the types of narrative that were mostly used so again, we could make ours similar to keep in with their normal videos and also stick to the genre. We then looked at videos by other artists in the same genre to see what the concentions were use the similar ideas within our our production.

We made a website thst enbled us to distribute our project to a wide audience. Here, we used the theme from our music video so that they were linked together, we also did this with the CD Cover and digipak. We added links to social network sites, links to tour dates, the artists images etc. We also had our music video on the home page which would promote their music straight away to anyone that entered the website.

Making the website

Here is a screen grab of what we have been doing today, as well as editing the music video. On this photo, we were perfecting the edges by using the clone tool. This is the image that we will be using for the background of our website.

Adding effects

Here, we are adding contrast effects to our shots to follow a convention of our artist

Website Ideas

We would like to keep the same sort of theme for the website as we had done on the music video and digipak and so below are some images that we could use as the backgroud to the website.

As you can see, all of the images are very dark and reiterate the 'cheating' that happens within the video. If we do decide to use these images, we will have to fix them up with photoshop to make them exactly how we would like them.

Below, I have edited another image.

Here, I have increased the contrast and blurred the edges. I think this gives a slight 'dreamy' feel to the image which therefore goes hand in hand with the actual bed itself.

Focus Group Evaluation

We had a focus group that watched our music video so far and evaluated it so that we knew what to improve on and also what they liked.

Next to each statement, they had to state whether they believed it was minimal, basic, good or excellent. Below is how they scored it:

Overall creativity - good

Holding a shot steady, where appropriate - excellent

Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate - excellent

Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate - good

Shooting material appropriate for a music video - good

Mise-en-scene appropriate for a music video - good

Editing making the meaning apparent to the viewer - excellent

Varied shot transitions, captions and other effects that are appropriate - excellent

Matching sound with images and editing to the music - excellent

Overall the music video so far is - excellent

We were extremely happy with the outcome of the group evaluation.

Second shoot

We started off and used the available actors to film the bedroom scene, we got plenty of shots so the day started off well. When our main actress arrived, we filmed parts that we needed all characters for so people weren't standing around doing nothing. After filming the first third of the day, Eilidh felt ill and went home, despite this setback, we carried on and made the most of the day.We then used the strobe light and filmed parts needed with that, meaning we didn't have a lot more to do. We wanted to make the most of the day so we got our actress to do various things so we could use for filler shots such as walking down a street, hitting a wall etc. When we got in the editing suite we were pleased with our results and were keen to add effects to our day's filming.

Updated Weather Forecast - 23rd November

Here is an update on the weather for our shoot. It seems to be a perfect day for filiming which is a major advantage and hopefully everything else will go perfectly too! :)

Friday 19 November 2010

First shoot evaluation

Despite mix ups with the actors before the day, the day started very well because the weather looked a lot better than we originally thought when we looked at the weather forecast. Because of this, we started straight away filming the 'memories' part of our video, outside in the sun before it got dark. We made sure we got plenty of shots of this so that when it came to editing, we had plenty to choose from for the final video. We then went indoors to shoot the bathroom scenes. Here we fixed up the lighting so that it was traditionally dark of a drum & bass video, but the actress lit up enough so that we could see the lip syncing. We had the music in the background so that it was easier for our actress to mime the lyrics. Again, we got plenty of shots of each line and each shot in the bathroom so that when we edit we have a wide variety to choose from. We have looked at our first shoot on the computer and we are very pleased with what we have first produced. One thing we aim to work on for the second shoot is to take more care in framing our shots.

Tuesday 16 November 2010

Shooting Plan

As there was a mix up with the schedule, actors had to work when we planned on filming so we have now decided to split it into two shoots. This has actually worked in our favor as it means we can pay more detailed attention to each individual shot.

Weather Forecast - 23rd November

This is the weather forecast for next tuesday when we intend on doing the next shoot. As it is a week away we will keep checking the forecast as it is likely to change.

Weather Forecast - 13th November

This was the weather forecast on the day we filmed. We were concerned as part of our shoot was planned to be outdoors so we took initiative and planned it indoors instead; concentrating on the bathroom scene. However, on the day the weather was beautiful and perfect conditions for our "memories" shoot.

Ideas for Digipack Image- getting used to photoshop

If you click on the picture you can see it bigger and in more detail! This is just a rough idea of something which could be used within the digipack; it was more about getting used to the kindof process we would need to go through in photoshop, and what tools would be appropriate.
